When I Can t Sleep

Within the past couple months, I’ve hit another round of difficulty sleeping. One night a few weeks ago, I could not get my mind to shut down and had to move to the couch for fear of keeping my husband awake. At 2 am, I lie on the couch and prayed to the Lord.

God, I am so very tired. Please, please help me to rest. Just relax and rest. I need you, Jesus, to give me peace and put my mind at ease. Thank you, Father. Amen.

Yes, the prayer was that brief. I was completely exhausted. The next thing I knew, the alarm was beeping at me and it was 6 am. I couldn’t believe how refreshed I felt on 4 solid hours of sleep! It felt like such a gift from the Lord.

It’s been a few years since I’ve had this much trouble with just falling asleep, though I’ve been a light sleeper for 19 years. However, besides saying a prayer for when I can’t sleep, I have a list of go-to Bible verses that I love to read. And I’ve read them so often, I have them mostly memorized.

Printable Bible Memory Verse Cards

Today I wanted to share the 9 Bible verses I use when I can’t sleep. If you are  a list person, then you will enjoy this list of Bible verses for when I can’t sleep.. But due to my recent sleeping issue, I decided to refresh the printable cards I keep in the nightstand drawer and why not share them with you?

In years past, especially when my husband worked night shift, I kept a stash of verse cards in the drawer or on the nightstand. Then I would pull them out whenever I needed to remember God was with me.

Psalm 62:5

Digital Bible Memory Verse Album

More recently, for Bible memory verses, I’ve been creating an album on my smartphone and then taking screenshots and saving the verses in one nice tidy little album. Then I can just thumb through them and read over them any time. However, I leave my phone downstairs at night. So I have a printable set of cards to use and keep under my pillow if need be. Or the smartphone album is fabulous during the day.

Romans 8:6

The Purpose

The point is, no matter how you choose to use the verses, God’s Word saturates our hearts and minds like nothing else can. His word is true and he will provide the rest we need when we give ourselves wholly to him. My prayer is that these cards will help you as much as they’ve helped me.

Enjoy the rest only Jesus can provide!

Rachel

Thank you for sharing. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who often lays awake till 2am at times. I felt the peace already from reading the scripture cards.

Thank you so much for sharing these verses! My husband works the night shift, and is going to seminary so many nights he drives home on only two hours of sleep. The feeling of being alone, and worrying about him driving often keep me awake at night. These verses came at the perfect time now that we are both suffering from lack of sleep. I can’t wait to start using your beautiful memory cards tonight.

What a neat idea, Rachel! I’ve learned that it also helps to pray when struck with insomnia. The repetition of prayers is soothing and comforting.

Thank you for these! I’ve had a LOT of issues with sleep the last several years and am working on relying more on the Word and less on a pill.

For me, its not so much ‘worry’ or difficulty ‘shutting off’ my brain at night. Its more related to a health issue I’m fighting. Sort of like my body simply doesn’t get a signal to ‘power down and rest’. I get tired, and want to sleep, but it just doesn’t trigger. 😛 But who wants to have to rely on a pill when God knows how to fix the body SO much better? And so much more gently.

I have started using these verses on myself more and try to at least stagger the use of a pill. Doesn’t always work as quickly as I’d like. . .but I’m also aware I do get a little ‘tense’. . .start worrying about ‘what if I don’t sleep? what if it doesn’t work’. . .and yeah, thats probably counter productive in more ways than one. lol Working on myself, though. I know God is always faithful.

Thank you for these verses. I often can’t sleep because I can’t shut off my mind, so these verses will be helpful.

I have a very bad case of insomnia right now. I’ve prayed & prayed but to no avail. Am I doing something wrong?

Not that I’m aware of, Sharon. I can understand the frustration. Have you sought a professional’s advice? Continued prayers for you!
