You Won’t Like It

Last week, one unusual day, my sweet Tarah and I sat down together for lunch.  I say it was “unusual” because rarely is it just two of us for lunch around this hopping house. So we prayed and began eating our sandwiches, and when my beautiful 3 yr old saw the potato chips on my plate, she wanted to try them.

Typically, I encourage the children to try everything new, so I think she was a bit surprised to hear mama say, “Tarah, those chips are spicy- they are hot. You won’t like it.”  But little Tarah wanted to try them anyways and she took one from my plate and plopped it in her mouth before I could get the word “No” out of my lips. It must not have tasted too strongly, because while I’m staring at her sweet face to watch her reaction, she quickly pops another one in.

This time, the reaction was a little more along the lines of what I was expecting!  Her eyes teared up, she opened her mouth and waved her hand in front of it.  As soon as the shock subsided, she quickly begged for her water.  They WERE spicy; Mama was right.  I could see her thinking: “I DONT like it.”

However, my girl’s next response surprised me.  In spite of my earlier warning AND her spicy experience, she picked up another chip.  (Of course, I was blaming my husband for her stubbornness persistence at this point, cause I’m not THAT stubborn. Alright, maybe I am…ahem… 🙂 ) But this time when I said, “Tarah, it’s HOT. You won’t like it,”  she then held the chip in front of her lips and started blowing on it to cool it off.

Too funny, huh?

But I’m pretty sure that’s what we do to God.

He warns us about a sin, something with final results that we “won’t like” and what do we do?  Take part of it anyways.  In spite of the warning.  And after we get burned, have we learned the lesson?  No, creatively, we pick up the same sin and blow on it, hoping to cool off the sting, failing to realize that our Father wants the very best for us.  He is never trying to withhold the best from us; His love for us is just too vast for that.

So thankful for the spiritual lessons God teaches me every single day through my children. The verse that came to my mind from this example:

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38 &39

Oh, how He loves us.

How has God shown His love towards you this week? Won’t you share?

  1. “we pick up the same sin and blow on it, hoping to cool off the sting,” I’m not pretty sure I do this; I’m positive I do. Great object lesson, Rachel.

Love your first statement here! And how silly of us. Thanks for your comment, Julie.

  2. Evenin’ Rachel Girl, I love those examples from daily living! I’m so thankful tonight that He loves me for me, and not how well I do things. Learning to walk in His Spirit certainly helps with all those many daily choices! What a blessing God is {a huge understatement, I know!}. 🙂 We’re so blessed! ~ Amy

Walking in the Spirit- how I need that not just daily but moment by moment. Thank you, Friend, for your kind words and for stopping by!

  3. Rachel, as I read your post, I was convicted because I do that more often than I want to admit. God help me to be more mindful of my choices–whatever they might be–and to heed God’s “You won’t like that” in the future.

    Thanks for sharing, dear one.
