What To Ask For When We Pray

bible reading challenge day 156

Do you ever feel like you don’t know what to pray? Or maybe you pray for the wrong things? Sometimes I think I pray for the wrong things. Not deliberately, just because I don’t know any better or haven’t thought through my words.

when we pray

Today I was thinking about what to ask for when we pray. What does God want us to pray for? Not just why He wants us to pray, but what does He tell us to talk to Him about?
Now, don’t be confused- God wants to hear ANYTHING we have to say to Him. Oh yes, He does. But, His Word does give us a few things we know for sure we can ask God for. And here they are:

1. Forgiveness

His love never fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me. Or you. Or anyone who is ready to repent and simply ask for forgiveness. I could list verse after verse here, but here’s one that I love:

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I Jn. 1:9

2. Wisdom

We can always ask for wisdom in any situation or circumstance!

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
James 1:5

3. Daily Provision

Simple reliance for our daily needs is something Jesus taught in His Prayer.

Give us this day our daily bread. Matt. 6:11

4. The ability to forgive others

When we feel ourselves not wanting to forgive others, then praying for the ability is the simplest way to be able to forgive.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Matt. 6:12

5. Deliverance

When temptation has a grip, pray. When the torment of an addiction is threatening, pray. When you are your own worst enemy, pray.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Matt 6:13

What do you know from Scripture to ask for when you pray? I’d love it if you’d share with us.

God tells us to pray when we are in trouble…

“Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray.” James 5:13

God calls us to pray when we are sick…

“Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.” James 5:14

    What a great idea, Rachel!!

    Blessings,

    Wendy

For protection, Psalm 91, needing assurance for the Lord’s help Isaiah 41:10, when attacked Isaiah 54:17, claiming strength of prayer against bondage 2Cor 10:3-5, claiming what is not yet in the physical realm, as though it is because God sees it as done Romans 4:17.

Lots of others, learned a lot from Beth Moore and a couple of dear friends. These automatically popped in my head.

Rachel thank you for these prayers of direction.

    Blessings,

    Joanne
