Have you ever tried to wrap your mind around who God is?

I have. And God is so big that when I logically try to process Him through human intellect, my head explodes. At least it feels like it’s exploding.

The very character of God is spelled out boldly through the names of God and their meanings.

In an effort to slow down and reclaim God’s promises of Who He is, the Relax & Reclaim women’s ministry event at CypressChurch.tv was held last Friday night. I felt so blessed and honored to have the opportunity to speak at this event and our theme verse was straightforward:

Be still and know that I am God. Ps. 46:10

God united the women’s ministry team around this verse before we ever held the first planning meeting; isn’t it such a cool thing when God provides affirmation to your heart through your sisters in Christ?

You see, I possessed this tiny fear that this verse might seem a little overused. Isn’t that terrible? Because the Word of God is NEVER overused, though my brain thought that for just a moment. Then God took me down a study trail and led me on a path I hadn’t really thought of before.  While we often think of being still as being motionless, the word “still” also means quiet.

At the moment I saw the word “quiet” in the Strong’s word description, I knew that God was speaking to my heart:

Girl, I know you love to talk. And I love to listen to you. Truly I do. But if you’ll settle down long enough, you tell me you want to hear me speak to your heart, it would be good if you could be quiet down long enough to listen.

When I took the time to listen, I found Him calling to me to be still and remember Who He is.

be still bird

Be still and know that He is EL-ROI- The God who sees me

She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”Genesis 16:13

Be still and know that He is JEHOVAH-RAPHA-The Healer

for I am the LORD, your healer. Exodus 15:26

Be still and know that He is JEHOVAH-JIREH-My Provider

…charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. I Timothy 6:17

Be still and know that He is JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH-God is already there

“Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away?  Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.  Jer. 23:23&24

Be still and know that He is EL-SALI-God of my strength

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Psalm 18:2

Be still and know that He is JEHOVAH-SHALOM-God is my peace

and the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. Romans 16:20

Be still and know that He is EL SHADDAI-All Sufficient One-Lord God Almighty

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. Genesis 17:1

Be still and know that He is ADONAI-God is my Lord and Master

O Lord, open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise. Psalm 51:15

Through spending those “be still” moments with Him, we close our mouths long enough to hear His whisper to our hearts.

If you are like me, and long so desperately to know Him more, might I encourage to take a few moments today to be quiet before Him?

I hope to share the video message with you tomorrow.

Oh and more more thing, my friend, Renee Swope, hosts a wonderful printable on the names of God! You can find it right here.

Be blessed!

  1. One of my favorite things at She Speaks 2012 was the prayer room where our names were placed under a specific name of God. Powerful! Thanks for this list, Rachel.

    1. Yes- for me too! We did a “prayer walk” at this event. We had the names of God on signs around the perimeter of the auditorium with cards the ladies could take with them to remember the names that spoke to them. Quite an experience!! Wonderful!

  2. I love this verse. Knowing and understanding the names of God gives me so much more understanding of who He is!

Many years ago, as part of the Women’s ministry, I was asked to put up a bulletin board and I used this verse. I also came away with this truth: Part of being still is also part of being healed.

  3. Beautiful. I just love all the names of God. It’s always great to remind ourselves of how He can be God in so many different ways.

  4. Rachel, I LOVE this! And just so you know, I could have been the one God was talking to about quieting down long enough to listen to Him. I just love me some long chats, but sometimes all the yakking does get in the way of the listening to what God’s trying to tell me.

Thank you for sharing this with us. I love the study of God’s attributes!

    Blessings to you & yours,
    ~Anna

    1. honestly, sometimes I do hear the Holy Spirit tell me to hush. 😉 Blessings to you, dear Anna!

  5. Hi Rachel 🙂 it is a blessing to pop by your blog daily, you are a great encourager to me 🙂
I named my Christian blog after this Scripture , because when my Dad passed away over 4 years ago, God firmly gave me this Scripture to hold onto. May I copy and paste what you have shared in this post? It is to print out to share with Prayer group.

  6. Rachel, I love this. It is so often in the midst of our struggles and storms that God reveals Himself to us, isn’t it? I love studying Him and His names…thank you for sharing this!!
