The Exceedingly Ironic Tale of the Ostrich

We’ve all heard the phrase:

…like an ostrich with its head buried in the sand.

But did you know, Wikipedia states:

Contrary to popular belief, Ostriches do not bury their heads in sand.[34]

Hmmmph. Oh really.

Oh the irony in the aforementioned phrase.  Who indeed has the head buried when speaking that cliche?  I dare to tell you that it is not the ostrich.

It is the human being who believes a fact to be true though they have never investigated that fact for themselves.

On the contrary, ostriches have extremely powerful legs, that when kicking, can cause serious injury and death.  After all, they can run up to 43 mph. (Wikipedia) That’s some serious running!

What I find most interesting in this animal, especially in light of the serious dogma the poor thing has to deal with, is that ostriches can only kick forward.

Paul said it this way:

Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Phil. 3:13-14

Perhaps the purpose of this animal in God’s glorious creation is simply to teach us a few things? Would love to hear what you think the lessons would be.

  1. I love the fact that you shared about how they run at speeds up to 43 mph!!! For me this morning, that reminds me that when God says GO, I go quickly! In danger, or in passionate obedience! 🙂 Thanks for sharing girl!

  2. Maybe they stand and fight with force, instead of running????
I grew up in Africa and heard more than once of an ostrich kicking forward and making a hole in a car door!
