For a few months now, I have been slacking in the family reading department, I must confess. It seems that there are so many demands in a day, that I’ve not read books with my two youngest, especially, like I would like. The good news is that with the seasonal change and daylight savings time, being intentional to read books together as a family is a little more doable. Who doesn’t want to snuggle up together and take some time to enjoy reading when it’s dark and cold outdoors? So today I wanted to share 5 family favorite Christian children’s books. These five books are ones that we own and the children request time and time again. Ready?
This children’s devotional is our family’s very favorite and we’ve read it through four times. I love the simplicity of the statements and the children enjoy looking up the Scripture passages on my Olive Tree Bible app when we finish the reading. I know four times seems like a lot, but each day is so relevant that we just keep reading.
2.The Blessing Jar
This book is always “discovered” by my children around age 4 because of it’s beautiful cover. Yes, kids often judge a book by the cover. ha. The lesson taught in this book is one I never want our children to forget and I try to revisit this book in November because it is SUCH a great way to learn to give thanks not only one special day a year, but throughout the days of everyday living.
3.I Love You to God and Back
My four year old is IN LOVE with this book right now and for three weeks in the summer, we read it every night. She loves the soft, cuddly characters in the book and enjoys listening to the voices I make for the different characters. I think she relates well to this book because it goes right along with our normal routines of the day. All of my children have really loved this sweet story and it’s a great one to close the day.
4.One Wintry Night
With the Christmas season quickly approaching, this book HAD to be on the family favorite list because we’ve read it together as a family every December for the last few years. My middle children (14, 11, and 10) enjoy this book still because of the memory of reading it together as a family. They laugh at the same spots and we all wait for the little ones to ask “What does that mean?” together. This beautiful story presenting the gospel of Jesus is sure to intrigue children and adults alike.
5.Heaven Is For Real For Kids
Since our Taylor has a terminal illness and has already lived beyond the normal life expectancy for her age, our whole family loves to embrace this book. I was just thinking today that we all need to pile in Taylor’s bed and read this one together again. There’s nothing like the reminder that one day in Heaven, she’ll be made whole and perfect. Until then, we can look forward to how wonderful that day will be!
November 10 is National Young Reader’s Day. While it’s another one of those “unofficial” holidays, I enjoy it because it does point us to maintaining good habits; certainly one of which is reading.
