Life and pain are synonymous.  Though full of joy, life is also pain and agony.  Many times as Christians, we think or feel that we should be exempt from this topic.

Kay Arthur approaches the hard questions in this book, “When the Hurt Runs Deep- Healing and Hope for Life’s Desperate Moments.” With careful guidance, the author gives 12 key Biblical truths that remind all of us that pain has a purpose.  God does not waste any event in our lives.   When we ask:

Why me? Why now?

What have I done to deserve this?

Will the pain ever go away?

How can God just stand by and let this happen?

What do I have left to hope for?

Kay has years of travelling through her own experiences of pain, as well as counselling and studying others through their pain.  The journey of exchanging fears and frustrations for hope that never disappoints is just that:

a journey.

I highly recommend this book, especially to those who have a current “hurt”, regardless of its form.  The depth of this book goes beyond pat answers and trite definitions; it allows for a vast thought process of how God works in our lives through every circumstance, in spite of every pain and trial.

As the mother of a child with a terminal illness, I love this book for assisting me through the thought process of suffering and loss. It is sure to be a continual reference for reminding me that God is still on the throne and has a unique plan for the life of my Taylor girl.

Most of all, the book is a reminder of the sweet promise of our Lord in John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
