What Baby Things and Mustard Seeds Have In Common

One hot summer day ten years ago, following Sunday morning worship , my husband and I headed towards home.  We had recently received the news that had provided the body and mind slam like the WWF has never before televised.

Our hearts were distressed.

We made the decision to trust God.  Especially with the timing of this news.

Because I was pregnant.

And two of the last words you want to hear as a mama growing with child?

Your older child has a Genetic Disorder that will result in a life expectancy of 10-15 years.   We are sorry for the delay in diagnosis.   There is a very small, but existing chance that the baby you are carrying could have this disease, MPS,  as well.

Of course, the story multiplies at incomprehensible speeds, but on this particular day, as our vehicle turned right out of the church parking lot, I felt a wonderful peace and a word from the Lord that whispered:

I love you. I’ll provide for you. Trust my plan.

About this time, just down the road from the church, travelling in a direction different to our typical route, were words on a sign that seemed to look much like “Heaven.”

Yard Sale.

As is my habit, my eyes quickly darted over the objects for sale. Scanning and planning. Scheming and dreaming. When suddenly, it was as if Heaven itself was shining down specifically on two objects:

a white cradle and matching changing table. (cue spotlight and music)

They were only asking $50.  I remember not having the cash and asking them to hold it long enough to withdraw the money and return.  Generously, agreement was made and purchase completed.

So that little white cradle served as sleeping grounds for a very healthy baby boy. God’s gracious gift to us.

And 2 years later…

a healthy little girl.

And 19 months later…

another precious boy.

And 3 years and 8 months later…

A beautiful baby girl.

And in April this year…

That little white cradle and matching changing table; they are a tad worn. Painted twice since that first second-hand purchase, they have some love dents. They’ve held their fair share of babies and served their physical, tangible purpose in life.

But to me, they represent so much more.

A day that I chose to trust in God’s provision for my life, no matter the circumstances or consequences.

A day that I always want to remember as a pivotal moment in our family’s history.

A day of another baby step in my walk of faith.

Need a miracle? He still works them today. Oh your provision may not be white. Or wooden.

But similar to that cradle and table, your miracle necessitates a tiny infant step of faith.

Matthew 17:20

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.

Are you ready to take the first step?
