One day this week I was out with the children and the plan was for Daddy was to meet up with us once he had finished his event. Since before my children could walk, Daddy coming home from work at the end of the day has been a big deal. Mama typically knows the second the garage door sounds and all it takes is “I hear somebody…” at which bodies fly towards the door to greet Daddy with hugs and kisses. So when Daddy met us out in a public place, as soon as I remarked, “I see Daddy,” the kids went crazy, causing no small public stir.
The public response to this incident was interesting to me, as I watched many heads turn to see which local celebrity had made an appearance. Smiles and stares were in abundance, all due to a simple act of sincere, passionate love for Daddy.
In an era when movies and television often display fathers as incompetent and unsupporting, I believe it’s easy to project the wrong vision of fatherhood. The best way I know to realign proper perspective on the role of fatherhood is to look at what God’s Word has to say. So today, we’re looking at 4 ways fathers show the Heavenly Father’s love.
1. Taking an interest in your child’s personality, likes and dislikes is a wonderful way for a father to imitate the way God loves His children. The Heavenly Father knows every detail of His children- His desire for a personal relationship with them is greater than we can imagine.
But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.- Matt. 10:30
2. Giving to your children is a direct model of God’s love for us. The very first thing God did to show His love to us? He gave. This could mean giving tangible things to them OR it could mean giving yourself.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matt. 7:11
3. A strong father will protect his family just as God protects His family. The feeling of security a father provides is irreplaceable.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. Psalm 5:11
4. Dads will help with answers to the questions of life just as God generously gives us the answers when we ask Him.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5
So if you need to figure out what to do for your man to show him just how much you appreciate him, perhaps you could review each of these points and find a way to express your thankfulness for what causes you to love him for the example he is of the Ultimate Daddy.
AND if your earthly daddy hasn’t been the best example of the Heavenly Father’s love, my best suggestion is to crawl into the lap of the heavenly Father. He already knows about it, but He would love to hear from you.
While you’re thinking about that, I have 2 Father’s Day posts that might help you out a bit. One is this Dad Mad Lib you’ll have loads of fun completing with your family. The second is this awesome list of books any dad would love to read.
