Why the Pure Joy Bible Reading Challenge 2021?

Last month, my husband unexpectedly lost his job and our future changed in a day. At the time I am writing this, he is still unemployed. At this point in our lives, it would be easy to be overwhelmed by anxiety and fear. The thoughts of “what-if” loom large when you have children to feed and care for and responsibilities to maintain. However, the Lord is always working on me, in me, and through me. I can honestly say that there is one thing that has kept me from becoming a total hot mess. The secret? Looking at life with a lens of gratefulness to God. Yes, even when life is challenging, in fact, when it’s most challenging, that’s when the art of counting blessings instead of burdens, is the most beautiful and rewarding.

I would like to tell you that I’ve perfected it, but mercy, no. There is always more practice and less perfection. I hope you’ll join me this month!

Cultivating a happy heart has always been a part of my faith journey. I’m guessing yours too? Everyone wants happiness. Being happy is experiencing the emotion of happiness, but being joyful? It’s more than an emotion. Joy is both a noun and a verb. It means to experience delight from a source or to display glad feelings. It is more than a “doing” or action verb. It is “being.”

In other words, joy surfaces when you possess joy, when it is part of who you are. And if you know Jesus, you know joy. The question then becomes:

How well do you know Jesus and how well do you experience the joy that comes from him?

What might happen if you took the next 31 days to purposely choose joy and let it soak in your heart?

Pure Joy: Cultivating a Happy Heart

INTRODUCTION to the Challenge

Cultivating a happy heart when you don’t know what the next step is? Not easy. The next month of cultivating a happy heart will be challenging for me and I know there are many of you reading this who feel the same way. It’s time to fill our hearts with the reminders that joy is possible because of Jesus.

Each month I host a monthly Bible reading plan and journal challenge to help our community enjoy reading God’s Word together and encourage our hearts to be faithful to Him.  Together, we have completed over 40 Bible reading plans, including both annual and monthly reading challenges. I’ve developed all sorts of strategies to help us read God’s word faithfully and there is nothing like this monthly system we are working through together.

Many readers have requested that I list our monthly resource at the beginning of this announcement post because you already know you want it and don’t need the details. So here you are! This month’s journal is available for purchase as a digital download.

The history behind this challenge

Pure Joy is the first Bible reading plan and journal I wrote in 2016. As a writer, I was feeling discouraged and as a parent, my heart was heavy as I faced the daily challenges of caring for my precious Taylor who was losing every skill she had ever gained. Terminal illness and searching for joy go hand in hand, believe it or not. I have spent many years learning how to clasp sorrow and joy together and the link between a grateful heart and a happy heart is one that cannot be denied.

This month, rather than fret about the future, the Lord impressed on my heart to re-write and re-format the Pure Joy Bible Reading Plan and Journal and so I’m excited to unveil this refreshed resource today! I cannot wait to walk through it together!
