If you are asking questions like:

How do I know when God is speaking to me?

How do I recognize the presence of God?

then this Bible reading plan is for you!

Why the In His Presence Bible Reading Challenge?

Do you ever struggle with busyness? Or maybe your schedule isn’t overflowing, but your soul is in unrest?

I’ve found myself to be a bit geared up lately. My calendar is full; my days are full. I really want to make sure that my heart is full. Because if it’s not, I’m in trouble.

This month’s Bible reading challenge is designed to slow us down to soak in the presence of Jesus.

We need him more than anything.

What might happen if you took the next 31 days to bask in his presence?

INTRODUCTION to the challenge

Each month I host a monthly Bible reading plan and journal challenge to help our community enjoy reading God’s Word together and encourage our hearts to be faithful to Him.  Together, we have completed over 35 Bible reading plans, including both annual and monthly reading challenges. I’ve developed all sorts of strategies to help us read God’s word faithfully and there is nothing like this monthly system we are working through together.

The story behind this challenge

If anyone had asked, they would have said it was impossible. Jesus was passing through town and the most unlikely character to want a front-row seat could see only the crowd. The idea that this rich man, a tax collector, wanted to see Jesus seemed ridiculous to most. That particular day the unlikely happened; a wee little man climbed a sycamore tree so he could see God in the flesh. Jesus saw him and invited himself over to have dinner with Zacchaeus, a well-known sinner.

But there are facts to this story that draw me in more than any of the above details. I noticed three points when I recently read Zacchaeus’ story in Luke 19:1-10. First, Zacchaeus hurried down from the tree when Jesus called him. Then, he received Jesus joyfully. Finally, he changed in the presence of Jesus.

THE CHILDREN’S SONG

The children’s song about Zacchaeus ends this way: “And as the Savior passed that way, he looked up in the tree and he said, ‘Zacchaeus, you come down. For I’m going to your house today. For I’m going to your house to stay.’”

I never understood that part of the song when I was a kid. I envisioned an eternal sleepover. And that sounded fun! No wonder everyone smiled at the end of the song, right?

You see, after Jesus came to visit, he never really left. Oh, his body walked out the door, but his spirit remained. Zacchaeus was a changed man who opened not only the door of his house but also the door of his heart.

Oh, I might follow Zacchaeus’ lead as I read through this topical Bible reading plan! I pray that I would rush to get to his feet and spend time with Jesus. I want to enjoy moments in God’s Word and prayer joyfully. And yes, I want to be forever changed by drawing closer to him. This is what happens when we enjoy the gift of his presence!! I can hardly wait!
