Desperate for God: 31 Prayers of Men & Women in the Bible

Welcome to the Desperate for God Bible reading and prayer journal challenge!

Moments of desperation strike every human heart. Whether tragedy, sickness, or brokenness, the reasons for our despair seem endless.

As I have drenched myself in the Psalms over the last 18 months since my daughter, Taylor’s, death, time after time, Psalm 102:17 has arrested my attention.

“He will respond to the prayer of the destitute.”

I researched the word “destitute” because in my mind, I typically would define destitute as “homeless.” Maybe you too? So I read every major Bible translation of this verse, thinking there might be another word to further explain. But after eight translations, each one used the word “destitute.”

Then I began to read various dictionary definitions of the word “destitute.” While we typically interpret this word as “lacking food, clothing or shelter,” the second definition simply means “lacking.”

“He will respond to the prayer of the lacking.”

You see, it’s not about what we lack. It’s the fact that we are always missing something when we rely on ourselves. It’s when we come to Him in honest desperation that God can do incredible work in our hearts and lives.

I formed a one-word prayer in response to Psalm 102. “Lord, I’m desperate. Let it be for You.” Join me as we examine 31 desperate moments in the Bible and the lives of those who echoed this prayer.

One Comment

  1. This one was a real up and down for me. I started the month really getting into the Journaling and doing the reflections, etc., but as the month progressed it was a challenge to do the reflections because they seemed to trigger emotions i wasn’t ready to deal with. Having a hard time finishing., but doing my best to at least do the readings.
