And so the list making has begun.

A list of names to whom we are giving gifts.

A list of family memory-making activities.

A list of baking to do.

A list of ingredients to buy.

While the lists keep me organized and help me not to leave anyone out,one of the biggest lists I want to tackle this month is helping my children understand the joy of giving.

As parents, we love to give gifts to our children. Seeing the joy on their faces is our gift. No one has to teach them how to enjoy gifts they love and desire. And no one has to teach us how to give to them. We love our families- so we give.

But teaching our children to enjoy giving requires focus and attention. And honestly, I need the reminder quite often to enjoy giving.

While I’m working on a few activities to reiterate the concept, I thought there could be no better way to begin than reading what God’s Word has to say about giving to God and others, as well as the joy of giving. And I plan to follow up the reading with a discussion about the meaning of each verse. So here are 8 Bible Verses on the joy of giving:

joy of giving

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9:7

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21

You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. Psalm 4:7

Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33

Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple. Test me in this and see if I don’t open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams. Mal. 3:10

The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives; Psalm 37:21

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Acts 20:35

After reflecting on this list, reading each verse in context would be very helpful if you are unfamiliar with it. So I added the links to assist in studying a bit further if you feel led.

What verses have you discovered in the search for the joy of giving?
