To View the True You

Lately when I’ve looked in the mirror, I’ve been a bit more critical.  Perhaps because that magical age of ….(you thought I’d actually tell you?!) is arriving very soon.  The creases and wrinkles seem to be more prominent.  I watched myself on video today and the lighting wasn’t exactly flattering.  One brow seemed to be furrowed and my eyes looked tired.

Thankfully, while I really want my husband to adore my looks, the bottom line is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. At least physical, external beauty.  But internal beauty?  There is really no question about its existence.  It either does. Or doesn’t.

So I propose to you this one guaranteed way to see yourself as you truly are.

Are you ready?  Because you’re not going to believe it.

Close your eyes.

To see yourself as you truly are:

close your eyes in prayer.

No, really.  Forget your physical existence and dwell only on your relationship with God.  Close your eyes and focus on internal beauty.

This afternoon I had some time to do just that and when I began  praying, the true view of myself wasn’t exactly beautiful.  God and I had some things to air out. (Ok, I had some things that needed hung out to dry and He did the airing-out part.)  And before closing my eyes in prayer, I’m afraid that my view of myself was rather distorted.  To tell the truth, I might as well been in the mirror room at the circus, because every side appeared extreme.

How about you?  Is the exterior fooling the interior?  Or maybe confusing the interior? Do you feel like you just can’t focus on what you should?

Can I simply encourage you to close your eyes in prayer?

Father, today I’m praying that my vision of myself would be clear and the same vision You have of me. I pray for anyone reading this post today, that their beauty would NOT be only skin deep, but spirit deep. May we reflect your love and grace clearly and beautifully. Amen.
