No one ever takes an entire jar of vitamins at once and then says, “I wonder why those didn’t help me.” Most of us anticipate that a person who has a broken leg is going to need crutches, right? People who undergo life-saving surgeries don’t come out of the operating room and say they are ready to go home. Neither should you or I expect a hurting heart to be healed overnight.
Hurting hearts take time to heal.
It doesn’t matter the struggle. Whether you’ve gone through divorce, maybe for a second time, and you’re trying your best to put your life together. Maybe you have struggled with an addiction of some sort. Perhaps the damage you’ve endured was physical at the beginning, but then you became aware of the mental or emotional struggle that quickly followed. No matter the terrible circumstance or problem you’ve encountered, healing takes time.
I love receiving emails from readers and often I receive one that says: How did you do it? How did you get through your divorce? Or how did you get through losing your mom? Or how do you get through every day, knowing that your daughter has a terminal illness? It’s a process. I wish I could send you a magic formula in a return email and poof- you’d be all better. I would love it if I could send you a list of steps in order, 1,2,3 and there you have it, emotional scars gone.
Since we both know that doesn’t happen, today I’m encouraging you to give yourself the gift of time to heal. Be gentle with yourself and don’t expect that a band-aid will do the trick. Little by little, healing will take place when you follow the Lord. You may even experience a bigger portion of healing at one time through a certain Scripture or the Holy Spirit speaking to your heart. But it could be years for you to feel fully alive again when you’ve passed through the pain and suffering this world gives. In fact, some issues on this earth won’t see healing while we still live here.
The truth is that time doesn’t heal all wounds. God does.
God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4
As long as we live in this world, we’ll face the challenges associated with sin. But that doesn’t mean we choose to stop trying. It just means we need to be patient with the healing process. While I can’t get you a series of steps verbatim, you can do things to promote healing in your life. Eliminating stress, as much as possible, is a great step to promote healing.

A friend just called and said her mother had died in a car accident and she is devastated even tho she know she is with Jesus. I printed out this post and I’m going to give it to her. Thank you so much and please keep these wonderful posts coming.
Bless you, Mary Lou. Praying for your precious friend right now.
Dear Rachel, this was perfect for me to read today. I’m going through a very LONG illness, doctor says will most likely take 1 1/2 – 2 yrs. to heal. Some days I’m at peace, others the hopelessness seeps in. Yet, in all, I will look to God. Your daily encouragements have helped me in more ways than you will ever know.
A warm, sincere hug to you. Thank you for everything!, Liane
