So thrilled for all of you who have joined the Read Your Bible Challenge! The response has just been fabulous and I can’t wait to see how God works among us as we faithfully read His Word.

Today I’m so excited to introduce our new weekly Monday series, Faith Hub: Where God & Technology Connect.

In this continually-growing age of modern technology, Christians are privileged to have media devices and internet access like those in previous generations have never known. The ability to stay connected with our family and friends when we aren’t physically in their presence is wonderful. I began using Facebook when my oldest left for college; with her living an hour away, I wanted to know what was going on in her life and Facebook seemed to be an easy solution. My desire to obey God through writing and speaking began to develop shortly after that, a little over 4 years ago, and social media soon became a valued method of connecting with readers. I enjoy technology and social media so very much and learning and using it seems to come naturally for me.

But how much connection is too much?

The use of technology is presenting questions for its usage to many Christians. Questions like:

Should Christians use social media at all?

Where does technology and social media usage “fit” in the life of Christians?

Should the church encourage the use of technology?

Should social media be used during church services?

How much technology or social media usage is too much?

How accountable are we to be with the words we post?

How can I determine the proper balance of time I spend using my devices or connected to social media?

These are just a few of the questions I see as pivotal issues for understanding exactly how a “faith hub” works. Predetermining how we want the center of our faith to effect our technology usage is, in my opinion, the key to circulating a Christian balance connecting God and technology in our daily lives. In this series of posts, we are going to discuss the above questions and more as we view what the Bible has to say about our use of technology and social media.

God wants to use technology- I firmly believe that He wants to use it for our good and His glory. What we as the current generation of Christians need to comprehend is that our technology and media usage affects our daily lives and those for whom we are responsible.

Are we taking the responsibility and privilege of social media usage and technology as just that-
a responsibility and privilege?

What is your first thought on this topic?

  1. This sounds like a great series – can’t wait to see what you share about it. Also, a great book on the subject is “From the Garden to the City” by John Dyer. Good, thought-provoking words about the Christian’s relationship to technology, from the Garden of Eden all the way through to the New Jerusalem.

  2. Honestly this is an area I struggle with. There are times when I can totally ignore social media and stay on track. There are other times when I get caught up in social media and lose track of the day. This is an area I hope to master this year.

  3. Yes! I agree. Technology can be used for good, to glorify God and to reach others for Christ. Also, to do my daily study BLB is super helpful so it would be difficult to not have it. I know that there has to be a boundary though as to how much time is used with it. I homeschool, and sahm with my 2 daughters and they need me, not the back of me or the side of me either. As does my husband, dog, home…etc… You get the picture. I truly appreciate the technology we have but recognize that it can harm relationships, and the ability to actually getting “physical” things done. There should be rules set up that we follow to protect our time with loved ones, it is precious! 🙂

  4. I think social media is a good thing for those of us who use it to keep connected to those we love that are far away. We still need to watch what we say. Whether we are speaking or typing we are accountable for what we say. We need to be cautious with how much time is spent using technology. It should not interfere with family time or church time.
