While I hadn’t seen her face for several years, my heart dropped when I met the eyes of my old friend.

She’d been hurt.

Her eyes reflected the sorrow. While I knew she was glad to see me, a part of my heart ached as I felt the aftershock of her waves of despair. Because we’re all broken.

Brokenness permeates human hearts.

Later in the day, I encountered one whose brokenness of spirit brushed against mine as we passed in the grocery store aisle. Though we’d never met before, her creased face held a trained blank stare. Her loneliness was masked with a slight rehearsed smile. And I prayed for her, not by name, not with one iota of comprehending her needs. I simply prayed because my spirit was moved to do so. Because we’re all broken.

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matt. 9:36

Brokenness permeates human hearts.

Broken spirits infiltrate the world.

That was she- harassed and helpless. She needs the Good Shepherd. He’s calling to her in her broken and confused state, but she doesn’t recognize His voice.

She awaits an introduction.

So does my friend with the hurting heart. Oh, her situation is a little different. She knows and recognizes His voice. But she needed a reminder- something tangible to help her comprehend her spiritual state…of brokenness.

Brokenness permeates human hearts.

Broken spirits infiltrate the world.

The broken world necessitates a Savior, a Healer, the Redeemer.

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. I Tim. 1:15

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. Job 19:25

We lean towards making the effort to heal ourselves. We try every bandaid in every color and trick ourselves into thinking that the superhero character on the exterior of the bandage will magically appear in real life. That all will be better and the brokenness will be healed.

Brokenness permeates human hearts.

Broken spirits infiltrate the world.

The broken world necessitates a Savior, a Healer, the Redeemer- Jesus.

The Savior, Healer and Redeemer rejuvenates the broken.

Jesus not only heals broken hearts-

He transforms broken hearts into His hands and feet.

Has someone reached out to you in a broken state? Or you to someone else? I’d love to read about it today.

Because we’re all broken.

  1. Funny when my heart was broken over 10 months, I thought the one person I was there for when her heart was broken a year ago would now be there for me boy was I every wrong =(. Not only was my heart broken by my love in February, she in turn also broke my heart and ended our friendship in March. I am still trying to put the pieces back together and trying to let go and move forward but all I do is go through my memories and wonder if there was something I could have done differently for all this not to happen.

    1. Oh Christy! I’m so sorry. People will disappoint us. No doubts there. My heart hurts for you and I pray that Jesus will feel close to you during this time. He is close to you- but sometimes our feelings get in the way.

  2. Just recently, a woman I had been ministering to for just over a year emailed me and shared that she was in the hospital after attempting suicide. She was reaching out to me, realizing her need for God and to turn her life around. To make a long story short, I was able to go to her immediately, and we visited for hours…sharing Scripture – the gospel – and she surrendered her heart to Jesus right there in that hospital room. This was a couple of weeks ago and she said she feels as though a huge weight has been lifted, has been in church, and is excited to know Jesus more and more! Praise the Lord for giving her faith to believe, amidst her brokenness. We have a mighty Redeemer!

    1. What an exciting beautiful story, Teske!! Thank you- YES we do have a mighty Redeemer!

  3. I remember a sister from my Bible study wrote me an email when I had missed a couple of sessions. She asked “Is something wrong?” That was all I needed to let loose everything I was going through. When I saw her on Sunday she gave me the biggest hug and wouldn’t let go. It was just what I needed.
