Sometimes I want to give up. I’m feeling a bit like that today as I steadily try to run faster and get back in shape to run a half marathon in the spring.
If you’re honest, you occasionally feel that way too. Whether it’s a relationship, a job, a heart issue, etc., that feeling of just throwing in the towel seems like a great solution, at least temporarily.
While there are times where change is necessary, that’s not giving up.
Change isn’t giving up; doing nothing is giving up.
When I need the strength to keep going, the best place to which I know to turn is God’s Word. That is where I find the strength, motivation, and energy to continue on. I thought you might want to be encouraged too- through these 12 Bible verses for when you feel like giving up.
Keep going, keep running, keep moving, keep praying.
Galatians 6:9
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
Ephesians 6:10
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
Psalm 28:7
The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.
Psalm 71:16
I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD; I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.
Isaiah 40:31
But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
I Corinthians 9:24
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.
Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Zechariah 4:6
Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.
II Timothy 1:7
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Psalm 18:32
It is God who arms me with strength, And makes my way perfect.
Romans 8:37-39
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:3&4
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Philippians 1:6
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Here’s one for Tawanna:
Don’t panic. I am with you. There’s no need to fear, for I am your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I, your God, have a firm grip on you and I’m not letting go.
Isaiha 41:10, 13
God’s Blessings, Tawanna. His timing is perfect. When you’re going through something hard, and wonder where God is, remember…the teacher is always quiet during a test.
Thank you Lynnda!
This was on time for me. Thank you God for using Rachel and the rest of these ladies to share your words. Aside from my husband and I facing a difficult journey trying to conceive our first child, I am also facing challenges in my career. We have been praying and believing God will bless us with a breakthrough for years. As I feel the onset of symptoms that let me know this was NOT our month, and receive emails advising me I was not the chosen candidate. I needed this encouragement. God Bless each and everyone of you ladies! Thank you so much for sharing these words.
Bless you Tawanna! God is gracious to give us what we need each day. Jesus, please be with Tawanna as you unveil your plan for her life. Be with her and bless her in a special way today. Amen.
Thank you Rachel!
“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness. The Lord is my potion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord. Lams. 3: 21-26
Be still and know that I am God. PS 46:10
love both of these!
Never will I leave you or forsake you. Hebrews 13:5
What a great and encouraging list of verses you had! It was also a blessing to read those that others have posted!
Some of my favorite go to verses:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.” -Psalm 42:5-6
Thank you so much for contributing, Marj! Wonderful verses!!
13 Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13,14
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2
The Lord Jesus has been reminding me to keep my eyes on Him, that He has not given me a spirit of fear, and to do everything I do in love. He is such a marvelous Savior, His compassion never fails. One of my children who is now twenty has gone far from the Lord and my heart has been gripped with fear. Fear that would literally take me down physically. The Lord spoke to me and told me that I was living in unbelief when I allowed fear to overtake me. He reminded me that he is sovereign, completely in control of all things, the everlasting Father, the almighty God, and that “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 And if he is sovereign and doing everything for our good why am I afraid? His word says, ” If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion” Philippians 2:1 He encourages and comforts me everyday. I praise God that He loved us enough to save us out of our sin by sending His Son to die for us. By His stripes we are healed, by His blood we are saved, by His resurrection we are sanctified. And one day soon we will be glorified with Him in heaven! Without Him there is no hope, He is my hope. Jesus is the victory that overcame sin and death. I am so thankful for the truth of His word that overcomes every scheme of Satan and the world.
Thank you for sharing these uplifting scriptures, all of us need encouragement every day. Thank you for being faithful.
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:13
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Oh Lorrie! Bless you for these words and may the Lord keep you strong during this time. Thank you so much for adding to our list of Scriptures!
Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
“For nothing good does God withhold from those who walk uprightly” -Psalm 84:11
Beautiful!
“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares The Lord, “plans to prosper you an not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jer. 29:11
This is my go to verse. I repeat it to myself at times when I’m in doubt.
love that!! Blessings Stacy!
Thank you so much for taking the time to look up these verses of encouragement . I really needed to hear them today.
Jesus, could you be with Linda in a special way today? We know you love her and want the very best for her. Blessings to you Linda!
“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Psalm 16:11
Although this is not a scripture, when we begin sharing the love and Gospel of the Kingdom message, the oil of joy is often released over us, breaking the yolk of the enemy who wants to rob, kill and destroy every shred of our inheritance — “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” Romans 14:7
Start witnessing to others to stir life up again! Before you know it after witnessing to three people you are suddenly filled with joy! Don’t allow the enemy to trick you into thinking that you are not called to be an evangelist. God’s first priority is SOULS, it needs to be our priority to stay under His enabling power of strength. He left 99 to search for 1. He will not come back until we make Souls a priority — sharing the love of Jesus and representing the Father well.
“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:21
Thank you so much for all these verses! Every one of them is familiar to me, and some of them are ones I’ve leaned on many times. Recently I have just been feeling low and unmotivated. Even though I read my Bible and lean on God, it was just what I needed this afternoon to see this list and read the comments of everyone. God is so good. Sometimes we tend to forget that others are going through things and needing His strength just like we are. I found your site via Pinterest, and am so thankful I did. God bless each of you who have shared these verses!
Isn’t it so true? Everyone is going through something. So glad to have you Dotty! Blessings to you!
The verses you chose are all wonderful and so are the verses the others mentioned. Thank you all!
I’ve realized (took me a long time) that no matter where you are in life (and I mean even geographically), or what’s going on in your life, and no matter how hard you try, there will always always be days when we want to give up. So I decided what I needed to do (with God’s help, of course) was to find peace and contentment in ALL circumstances. It’s not easy, but it’s what I strive for everyday.
Here’s my verse:
John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
p.s. I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!!
Oh I love John 14!!! And your theory of life. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by and thank you for the compliment. God is gracious!
“The Lord is my ROCK, and my FORTRESS, and my DELIVERER; My GOD, my STRENGTH, in whom I will TRUST; my BUCKLER, and the HORN of my salvation, and my HIGH TOWER.” Psalms 18:2
“Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Psalms 37:4
“Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him.” Proverbs 30:5
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalms 46:1
“For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.” Psalms 18:28
“The righteous cry and the Lord heareth and delivereth them out of all their troubles.” Psalms 34:17
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalms 34:18
“In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even unto his ears.” Psalms 18:6
“He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.” Psalms 18:7
“Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.” Psalms 25:1
What a wonderful string of verses!!! Praise be and thank you!
Amen!!
“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope, and a future.”
Jer 29:11
Amen!
Think you and the ladies covered all the ones I turn too in challenging times Rachel. Phil 4:13 became my daily mantra during one especially trying year with one of my kiddos. Had to say it out loud each morning before I rolled out of bed, as the enemy would whisper words of discouragement, almost convincing me I was absolutely not up to the tasks and unknowns of the day that lay before me! Isaiah 40 was another go to. God is good and in my weakest moments, I find His strength, lean hard into Him, and can take one more step of faith forward.
I turned to those encouraging words again (and the ones re: running a race) this past summer when a younger friend asked me to run a half marathon with her in the fall. She’d just had a baby and needed the extra accountability to get back into shape. She knew she wouldn’t be motivated enough on her own. Except, that I was not a runner, never have been. An in shape walker, bike rider, even gym rat at times, yes, but runner, uh, uh, no thanks. Bad knee, exercise enduced asthma, I could come up with all kinds of excuses why this seemed like a bad idea. But, I KNOW that if God calls you to it, HE will see you through it. I can do ALL things.. I felt His gentle nudge to be a good friend and accept the challenge.
Believe me, there were times we both wanted to quit during training! Like, when an old achilles tendon injury flared up for me, and shin splints on her, when the air quality was bad, when the alarm went off at 5 am, on SUNDAY, (to get ‘er done, before church), when we were only able to actually run/train together twice in 16 weeks due to our crazy mom schedules and living 25 minutes away from each other, when I bonked, badly, after going 9 miles for the first time ever.
But we kept each other accountable, celebrating every progression, every mile, especially on the day of the race. (Not unlike you are doing with everyone on this site) What a glorious feeling of accomplishment when we both crossed the finish line! I’m sure you know that feeling well. Not in any time to brag about, mind you, but we FINISHED. It’s a memory we now treasure. It took my body two full months to recover and I’m just getting back into my regular fitness routine. Go figure, my friend has just brooched the subject of another race in the spring. Oye! With you all the way on this one Rachel. With God behind us, we can both make it to our next respective finish lines.
I suspect that is how we will all feel when we have persevered here and finished our reading though the Bible in a year task. (I am after all, one of the few that admitted I hadn’t done that before. Thanks for your encouragement!) It seems daunting, it is definately not a sprint, but a marathon. It will take discipline, overcoming obstacles as well as keeping each other accountable and excited to see it through to the wonderful day of joyous celebration at the end. Not unlike our Christian journey overall, when we cross into the glorious streets of Heaven and see Jesus face to face. 🙂 Worth every stumble, every discouraging moment, to experiance such victory! Praying for all of us to continue to persevere together in the tasks and challenges this life lays before us. We CAN do all things though Christ who strengthens us. Blessings!
oh Angie! Thank you so much for this testimony of faith today Sister!! just love it. Yes, we can. And we will.
Amazing
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10
Love Sonita’s idea of writing them all over the mirrors and windows too! Much Love and Peace to All.
I just got off the phone with my mother-in-law and she was telling me some discouraging news about my father-in-law. He’s been battling cancer and she’s afraid he’s going to stop fighting. In an effort to get my mind off things I got on Pinterest and immediately found this post. I wrote down the bible verses in a journal and I plan on giving them to my father-in-law. I hope they help him find the strength he needs to keep fighting. Thank you for your words of encouragement.
Oh Lisa. Father, today I pray for Lisa and her mother and father in law. You know their situation; we know you will use this cancer for Your glory. May Your Word infuse strength into his mind, heart, soul and body. We pray these things by the power of Your Son’s name. Jesus. Amen.
Thank you
I’m having a rough week as a sandwich generation homeschool mom, I’ve printed out this post and I’m taking my dry erase crayon and writing these verses on windows and mirrors all around my house! Thanks for posting them.
You go girl!!! In His strength. Bless you!

Wonderful list, Rachel. Thanks for sharing.
Isaiah 26:3 “Thou will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee.”
Love. 🙂
“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain”. I Cor. 15:58
good stuff!! Thanks Gina!
We are all more alike than different–for sure. The enemy sough me out quickly this morning that I didn’t even want to be by myself–that bad! So, as a favor to my family and to myself, I locked myself in my home office to check emails. I had several emails from Pintrest where others had pinned from my boards, but for some reason I clicked on the latest/newest email to see who this person was and if she had boards I would find useful or interesting. This is not my usual practice as I have always pagged down to the beginning of the day’s emails and worked backwards to the latest. You see God came right to my rescue in putting that in my head (the part about clicking on THAT email/pintrest because it lead me to a faith music board & I started listening to the pinner’s You Tube praise videos and songs, pinning them onto “My Faith” board. As usual, this lead to other people’s boards where I found scripture I needed to read, as well as right to THIS SITE. Thank you for being God’s instructment today when HE knew exactly what my heavy heart needed. I know not to grieve over things I cannot change but I’m not perfect (for sure!), so praise God in reminding me to give everything to HIM!
Linda- what a neat story of how God used the internet to take you to places of praise, thanksgiving, and His Word!! I love it. May you continue to find peace through Him. I’m so glad our paths crossed. Indeed, let’s give everything to Him. Blessings to you today!
He, who began a good work in you, will be faithful to complete it even unto the day of Christ Jesus.
