My four year old son received a pack of jelly beans in his morning class at church this past Sunday. Reminded me of the wordless books I used to receive in Sunday School. Enclosed in his jelly bean packet was the following poem:

Red is for the blood He gave,

Green is for the grass He made,

Yellow is for the sun so bright,

Orange is for the edge of night,

Black is for the sins that were made,

White is for the grace He gave.

Purple is for the hour of sorrow,

Pink is for the new tomorrow.

A bag full of jelly beans,

Colorful and sweet,

Is a Prayer…Is a Promise…Is an Easter treat!

His older sister was reading this little poem to him yesterday; she’s six. She took a pause at “Black is for the sins that were made…” and then stopped.

“So THAT’s why the black ones taste so bad.”

Apparently licorice flavor is not her thing.

If only Christians viewed sin as it is. Or at least with some of the wisdom of my six yr. old.

Hebrews 11, well-known as the “Faith Chapter,” has one precious phrase about Moses in verse 25:

“Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;”

Moses CHOSE to wander in the wilderness with God’s people over the attraction of Egypt. He knew the temporal things of this world could not satisfy.

How about you? Got a choice to make?

Sin is pleasurable. But ONLY for a season.
