Today I’ve been preparing for summer break with calendaring, activities, and daily schedule (or lack thereof). And I’m so excited to bring to you this summer Bible Reading plan for children! This plan covers the book of John and is designed for 3rd through 6th graders. If your child is younger than 3rd grade, you could still do the plan by reading aloud to your child/children.

I chose the book of John for our summer reading, which has 21 chapters. I divided each chapter in half to keep the segments a little smaller.  The approximate reading time for each half chapter is 15-20 minutes, depending on the speed of your reader.

John is the gospel that is written simply, yet descriptively. Whenever I receive an email asking where to start reading the Bible, I typically recommend the “small” books of John, I, II, and III, and then immediately after reading those, I recommend the gospel of John.

Divided in this manner, the Bible reading plan can be completed in 6 weeks- making it perfect for a summer reading program!

  1. I am SO excited to have come across your website – and to get my kids reading the Bible this summer! Thank you so much for taking the time to create this and for so generously sharing it! I can’t wait to dig more into your website!

  2. I am so glad you have posted this. My daughter knows that I am reading the bible through this year for the first time so she mentioned doing some bible reading this summer. I knew exactly who would have something like this!! So, thanks so much!!!

    1. That’s awesome, Renee! I’m excited for my kids to do it too! 😉 🙂 Thank you!

Your Book of John reading program is a great think. I have a mentally challenged Adult son who will love this. Although a adult he only works anywhere from a mental age of 7 to about age 10

    1. OH Jackie- that makes me so happy for many reasons. Blessings to you and your son!

  4. I was going to make my own plan this summer, but then I saw yours and it will save me the work.

I love the summer reading plan! My son dislikes to read and this will help with his reading! He prefers for me to read the Bible to him still.

I am still hanging in there with the Bible reading! A little behind again! It’s been a stressful 2013. My Daddy is doing better. My brother (who has brain damage) had to have emergency back surgery. Please pray for him (Scott Morris). My husband, Danny, was in a wreck with an 18 wheeler and will be having surgery in June, followed by 6 months of recovery. Please pray for him, me and that he doesn’t lose his job. I know that God will provide what we need for the 6 months! Our house is paid for so that is a huge help.

I pray that everyone will be Blessed beyond belief!

    1. Hey Christina, just wanted you to know that I’ll be praying for your family!

  6. Heather P says:

Still on track with the reading.

  7. I LOVE it! I’m thinking that it may be good to pick one key verse out of each day’s reading for my boys to write out. I know that has helped me in my reading.
Thanks so much for doing this. I’m going to print all 5 of my boys one…even my 4, 6, and 7 year olds. I’ll probably use stickers for them to chart their progress on your printable—which I love!

The stickers are a great idea! I may use them too!
