The sign brought incredulous joy to a group of magi prone to star-gazing.

Boldly making its presence known in the black night, the star danced beautifully before their eyes.

This was peace on earth.

Joy to the world.

The wise men had been watching and waiting. Perhaps the eldest took the lead in marking the night sky maps, as their eagerness for the anticipated King catapulted one particular evening.  They journeyed from somewhere about the land of Persia, all the way to Jerusalem, and their arrival at the king’s palace stirred the city. Not just a bit.

Now the wise men knew that prophecy foretold of the king’s arrival in Bethlehem and as they set about to move on with their journey, King Herod requested that they return to him with news of the whereabouts of the young child. We’re told in Matthew 2 that while they heard what the king had to say, they moved on in search of the child King.

And the star? It guided them each step of the way, leading them to the exact place the young child was.   Though the wise men did not yet see Immanuel- God with us, they were elated to see the star up close, resting soundly in the night sky over the baby head of the very God of glory.

Finally the highlight of their traversing, upon seeing Jesus, and his mother, the wise men fell to the ground and worshiped.

And then they opened their treasures and gave Jesus the best they had.

I have to ponder just how much faith these men had as they packed their camels for the journey to begin with.

I mean, here they are, carting around treasures across the desert, risking peril and theft, and their lives…

all for the crowning moment of giving it to God With Us- Immanuel. The Messiah.

And I can’t help but ponder…
