Ok, that title is not EXACTLY true, because I have as many favorite Bible verses as my 3 year old has favorite dresses. Which is essentially every dress in her closet. 😉

But, I do have a favorite for today;this one seems to be my turn-to verse.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

I don’t know about you, but I really like to understand things.  I love to read and comprehend.  I want to know why. Having unresolved issues in my mind can drive. me. crazy.

But this verse reminds me that my comprehension of a circumstance or situation is not always the best one.

Relying on my own understanding is not the wisest solution; trusting in God is.

Our family just arrived back from a trip over the river and through the woods from Ohio to  West Virginia.  The roads we started on at home were fairly straight.  But the closer we drew to our destination in the middle of nowhere, the more hills and bumps we encountered in our path.

Were we headed the wrong direction?  Not at all.  But though the road seemed all swerves and curves, the direction we took was the most direct to my dad’s farm.  No other road would take us straight there. The path seemed long and the going seemed slow, but the end result was the exact destination we intended.

What if we had focused on the roads and decided to stop travelling this road because it just seemed too difficult?  We would have never arrived at our intended place to stay.

I believe that Proverbs 3:5&6 is NOT saying that God will straighten our paths and make them easy to follow.  Instead, when we are willing, He aligns our eyes with His.  Those circumstances that seem so bumpy and distorted? Suddenly, through His vision, the straightest path to our destination is revealed.  No other road would have gotten us there.

What is your favorite verse? (for today. 🙂 )

  2. Thanks, Rachel, your words were just what I needed today…today my favorite verse is 2 Cor. 3:5 reminding me that my adequacy comes from God.

  3. We’re thinking alike today, Rachel! Here’s mine for the day: “A man’s heart plans his way,
but the Lord determines his steps (Proverbs 16:9).”

  4. Ha! Ha! Your favorite verse today was my favorite verse on Friday. The whole path thing came up for me over and over. I wrote about it in my blog, and had a friend post about it on Facebook…and here you are with the same verse. God always makes me laugh when he does stuff like this! 🙂 Don’t know what my verse will be for today…I’ll just have to rely that He will let me know.
