Can We Outgive God?

On Friday, my awesome friend, Lisa Jo Baker (The Gypsy Mama), hosts a writer’s exercise and linkup.  I haven’t participated in many weeks and this week I was really feeling the call. 🙂  We write for 5 minutes flat, no edits, no takebacks….and then actually come up with the nerve to hit “publish” if we dare.

So here we go: The word prompt is GRASP.

Perhaps our family is back in the groove now, the ebb and flow of a school schedule, when the clock becomes a friend and dictator all in one. God answered prayer this week in a big way; can’t share all the details yet, but His ways are higher than our ways for sure.   Not exactly how I thought the twist and turn of the situation would unfold, but isn’t it grand the way He answers in a way that you have no doubts the answer is from Him. I’ve heard all my life…

You can’t outgive God.

I’ve always taken that as a monetary theory. But I’m learning each day, more and more, that while it may apply to finances, and giving, and offering, the truth is:

You can’t outobey God.

We grasp at our duties, clutching them around us, checking off the lists, and feeling good about all we give. But more than our straw-grasping, He requests obedience.

I Samuel 15:22- To obey is better than sacrifice.

Today this gives me great clarity- as it has been the theme in my life this week. In working on the launch team for the book, Everything- What You Give and Gain to Become More Like Jesus, by Mary DeMuth, Mary states:

Growth comes from undecorated obedience…we really learn the deeper truths of God perched on the precipice of risk, when we dare to jump off into the great unknown of obedience.

Then last night, at our GROW group here in Columbus, as we are studying Unglued, by Lysa Terkeurst, this truth  from Micah 6:8 popped out:

The Lord requires only three things of you: to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly.

So easy to get caught up in sacrificing…and substituting…and grasping… When all He wants is for us to walk with Him.

Have you grasped at any straws lately?  Why don’t you share them with us?

  1. Perhaps, I’m grasping for more of Him? I love your thoughts friend! ~ Blessings, Amy 🙂

  2. Oh, yes….I try to please Him with everything and the kitchen sink except simply walking WITH Him.

  3. Great post. In my small group we are studying John. I find my heart grasping two concepts: (1) He must become greater and I must become lessor and (2) You follow me. Everything this week has been wrapped in these powerful truths.

  4. Glad you decided to join 5 Minute Friday today, Rachel. I’m always grasping at straws, battling between my will and God’s plans. I love it when they align, which happens more often as I draw near to Him. Can’t wait to hear your answer to prayer. Have a sweetly blessed day.

    1. I”ll have to pop over and see you! oh what you said is so true about the alignment. Blessings, Friend!

  5. Isn’t it just like us to put so many requirements and restrictions on ourselves that we get caught up in the work of it all instead of the walk. Thank you so much for these beautiful words.

  6. He requires so little and we ask so much.
Thankful he pours out his grace on us.
